It’s no surprise that the island country of Mauritius is a popular tourist destination. With endless beaches, lush vegetation and majestic mountains – it’s a sight for sore eyes. The island’s beauty is also what attracts filmmakers from around the globe. Another factor making Mauritius an alluring filming destination? The country’s Film Rebate Scheme.
Mauritius’s Film Rebate Scheme has increased film investments significantly and filmmakers from all over the world can enjoy a rebate of 30% to 40% on films shot in the country. At Out of the Box, we specialize in facilitating location shoots for the film, photography and advertising industry. We’ve compiled a guide to the Mauritius Film Rebate Scheme to highlight why you should choose this island for your next shoot.
What is the Film Rebate Scheme?
The Ministry of Arts and Culture in Mauritius introduced a Film Rebate Scheme in 2013 to fast track the establishment of the local film industry in Mauritius, by subsidizing 30% of production expenses of qualifying producer’s films. These expenses include logistics such as equipment hire, transport, labour and more.
As of 2018, more than 100 films have been approved, with more than 60 of them already shot in Mauritius. Some of these films have included major Hollywood stars such as Anne Hathaway, lending credibility to the project.
Do I Qualify for a Film Rebate?
A variety of film projects fall under the scope of the Film Rebate Scheme’s mandate. The first step is to register your film production company in Mauritius. If you plan to shoot on of the following types of productions, you’re eligible for the film rebate:
- Feature films
- Documentaries or Real-Life Programmes
- Television Movies
- Lifestyle Programmes
How Does It Work?
The first step is to apply. Submit your project proposal to the country’s Economic Development Board no later than a month prior to production. Fill in all the relevant forms and attach the required documents as stipulated in this guide.
The Film Rebate Committee will assess your application and issue an approval letter and clearance if it complies with all requirements. You’ll be able to commence with filming soon after and submit a form to claim your rebate once production is complete.
